Xubuntu 16.04 released, Ubuntu Software Centre replaced by GNOME Software

The Xubuntu team has just announced the immediate release of Xubuntu 16.04. Xubuntu 16.04 is an LTS (Long-Term Support) release and will be supported for 3 years. A notable change in this release is the replacement of Ubuntu Software Center with GNOME software. Xubuntu 15.10 will be shipped without Gimp, Abiword and Gnumeric

Following a recent vote cast on whether to drop Gimp, Abiword and Gnumeric but include LibreOffice by default from Xubuntu 15.10, Simon Steinbeiß has announced that Xubuntu 15.10 will replace GIMP, AbiWord and Gnumeric with LibreOffice components based on the outcome of the vote. As it stands, LibreOffice Writer will now be used instead of AbiWord and LibreOffice Calc will replace Gnumeric, but there is no mention of what application will replace GIMP image viewer and editor.

Xfce 4.12 released

Xfce 4.12 a new stable version that supersedes Xfce 4.10 was recently released. Xfce is a lightweight, open-source desktop environment for Linux and Unix systems. It is based on GTK+2, and a partial support for GTK+3 implemented. This latest release focused more on polishing user experience on the desktop and window manager, and on updating some components to take advantage of newly available technologies.
