Install Apache Tomcat 7.0.55 on Ubuntu 14.04

The Apache Tomcat Project released Apache Tomcat 7.0.55 late last month. This release came with a number of bug fixes and improvements since release 7.0.54. The notable changes since 7.0.54 included Update to the Eclipse JDT Compiler 4.4, Better error handling when the error occurs after the response has been committed, Various improvements to the Mapper including fixing some concurrency bugs, and Update to Tomcat Native Library version 1.1.31 to pick up the Windows binaries that are based on OpenSSL 1.0.1h.


Apache Tomcat 7.0.55 other updates

  • Improve the executor configuration used for the callbacks associated with asynchronous writes
  • Move code that parses EL expressions within JSP template text from Parser to JspReader class for better performance
  • Fix a regression in EL parsing when quoted string follows a whitespace
  • Add a new limit, defaulting to 2MB, for the amount of data Tomcat will swallow for an aborted upload
  • Ensure that Tomcat does not shut down if the socket waiting for the shutdown command experiences a SocketTimeoutException
  • Avoid delay between registrations of mappings for context and for its servlets

Install Apache Tomcat 7.0.55 on Ubuntu 14.04 & Ubuntu 14.10

cd ~

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk


tar -xvf apache-tomcat-7.0.55.tar.gz

mv apache-tomcat-7.0.55 tomcat7

cd tomcat7/

echo "export CATALINA_HOME=\"~/tomcat7\"" >> ~/.bashrc

source ~/.bashrc

sudo ./bin/

– Access tomcat via the browser using URL ‘localhost:8080
