As posted on XBMC website by Nathan Betzen, XBMC (known as XBox Media Center) will now be called Kodi Entertainment Center. XBMC software has been around for awhile and has under-gone three name changes. First name was Xbox Media Player since 2002, then followed by Xbox Media Center in 2004 before the final name XBMC in 2008.
As the application had evolved over the years, the need to change the name was necessary not only to move away from the name Xbox which is more centered at the Xbox gaming platform but also for legal reasons, because the developers never had any sort of legal control over the use of its name, which has resulted in a whole slew of problems.
While the software still acts as a media center, it also hosts addons, loads games, streams content to and from numerous devices, and can ultimately act as a complete replacement for whatever platform it is hosted on. Indeed, XBMC today is far more an Entertainment Center than a simple Media Center.
As it stands, the average user will see little difference with the new Kodi. The software will remain the same. Users will get to keep using the software however they like. The most significant difference for most people will be a slightly altered splash screen on boot up. As a bonus, first Kodi 14.0 aka “Helix” alpha3 had been released.
