Install Conky in Ubuntu, Linux Mint

Conky is a system monitor that can display just about anything, either on your root desktop or in its own window. Conky has many built-in objects, as well as the ability to execute external programs or scripts (either external or through built-in Lua support).

Step 1: Install Conky

– Open terminal Ctrl+Alt+T and run the following command

sudo apt-get install conky conky-all

– Next download the Startup Script

cd ~

wget -O .start-conky http://goo.gl/6RrEw

chmod +x .start-conky

– Open Startup Applications (type Startup Application in Dash) > click Add > In the dialog box, click Browse > Now press Ctrl+H to show hidden files. Select .start-conky and click Open

– Enter Conky as Name and Comment and click Add

Step 2: Setup Conky

– To have a custom conky setup to suit your need, you need to create a file called ‘.conkyrc’ in your home folder

sudo gedit /home/'your username'/.conkyrc

– Get sample conkyrc files from here, paste content in .conkyrc, edit to suit your need and save. Or copy the existing content in /etc/conky/conky.conf, edit and save

– Logout first and log backin. Then you will notice the new config running with information displayed on your desktop

Conky for Ethernet

cd ~

wget -O infinity-noobslab-eth1.zip http://drive.noobslab.com/data/conky/infinity/conky-infinity-eth.zip

unzip infinity-noobslab-eth1.zip

rm infinity-noobslab-eth1.zip

Conky for Wifi

cd ~

wget -O infinity-noobslab-wlan1.zip http://drive.noobslab.com/data/conky/infinity/conky-infinity-wlan.zip

unzip infinity-noobslab-wlan1.zip

rm infinity-noobslab-wlan1.zip

Adjust gadget size if needed

nano ~/.conkyrc
