Installing Ubuntu 13.10 Desktop on VirtualBox

If you are one of those newbies to Ubuntu OS like me and want an easy way to play with the platform, I have put together simple step-by-step instruction on how to install a typical Ubuntu Desktop on a VirtualBox. Version 13.10 was the most recent release as at the time of writing this post.

Step 1: Download the ISO file

– Go to Ubuntu Desktop download page. Select either 32bit or 64bit and click on the orange download button. Note: if your computer memory is 4GB or more, go for 64bit download else if less than that, go for 32bit download


Step 2: Create New Virtual Machine

– Open VirtualBox Manager, click on New, enter VM name, select Linux as Type and select Ubuntu (32bit or 64bit)


– Enter recommended RAM


– Create a virtual hard drive


– Choose desired Hard drive file type


– Leave default (Dynamic)


– Allocate desired hard drive size


Step 3: Install Ubuntu Desktop

– Start the virtual machine for the first time, you will be prompted for the start-up disk. Click the yellow folder icon and select the downloaded ISO file. Click Start


– Wait until the Welcome screen appears. Ensure you select appropriate language and click [highlight]Install Ubuntu[/highlight]


– Check Download updates if you want updates installed during the OS installation. You can also check the third-party software if you plan to play mp3 music files


– On Installation type, allow default since your hard drive is new. For advanced users, you can select the option “Something else” and do some partitioning. Click Install Now


– Enter your location


– Select desired keyboard layout


– Enter appropriate information in each boxes and click Continue


– If you have Ubuntu One account then enter your email address or create one if you don’t have or simply click on [highlight]Log in later[/highlight] to bypass this screen


– At this stage, the installation will begin and might take awhile before completion


– After installation is completed, a message box will appear notifying you of completion


Note: Before clicking Restart, open the properties of the machine, navigate to Storage, right-click on the image (iso) file and Remove Attachment…


– After reboot, the login screen will appear. Enter the account password and click the Arrow to initiate the login


– We finally got to the Ubuntu desktop screen 🙂


Step 4: Install latest updates

– Click on System Settings > Details and click on Install Updates. Enter root password when prompted
