Installing Windows Server 2008 (64bit) Domain Controller in an existing Windows Server 2003 (32bit) domain

  • If this domain controller is the first Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller in the forest, you must prepare the forest for Windows Server 2008 R2 by extending the schema (that is, by running adprep /forestprep) on the schema operations master if this has not already been done.
  • If this domain controller is the first Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller in a Windows Server 2003 domain, you must prepare the domain by running adprep /domainprep on the infrastructure master.Note: In Windows Server 2008 R2, Adprep.exe is located in the /support/adprep folder.
  • Enterprise Admins
  • Schema Admins
  • Domain Admins for the domain that contains the schema master

3. Prepare the domain for Windows Server 2008 R2

\support\adprep\adprep32 /domainprep

4. Install the new domain controller using the Windows GUI

Note: A warning screen may popup, telling you about DNS warning, click YES to continue.

– On the Location for Database, Log Files, and SYSVOL page, type or browse to the volume and folder locations for the database file, the directory service log files, and the system volume (SYSVOL) files, and then click Next

Note: Windows Server Backup backs up the directory service by volume. For backup and recovery efficiency, store these files on separate volumes that do not contain applications or other non-directory files.

– On the Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password page, type and confirm the restore mode password, and then click Next

Note: This password is what you will need to start AD DS in Directory Service Restore Mode (DSRM) for tasks that must be performed offline. So keep password in a safe place

Next Step:

– Check event log for any event IDs 1030 and 1058. If they exist then run the following command to flush the DFS cache “dfsutil purgemupcache”

– Validate the Health of your Active Directory. Click here for details
