Are you looking to install font on your Ubuntu OS? There are certain cases or situations where you want to use a specific font type that is readily not available in your Ubuntu Operating System. In this tutorial, I will show you how to simply install a Microsoft font or a Google Web font that is of interest to you easily on your Ubuntu 16.10 or Ubuntu 16.04 or any other earlier versions of Ubuntu.
For the purpose of this tutorial, I will be installing Oswald Google Web font. What you need is to ensure you have downloaded the font’s .ttf file.
How To Install Font on Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04
- Download and unzip the font
- Install the Font for all users
sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/fonts/truetype/oswald sudo mv ~/Downloads/Oswald/*.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/oswald/
- Update font cache
sudo fc-cache -f -v
To use the new font, install latest Unity Tweak Tool on Ubuntu 16.10, Ubuntu 16.04 and other derivatives using the following command below
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool unity-tweak-tool
- When Unity Tweak Tool opens > Click on Fonts
- Click the font option you want to change and search for the newly installed font
- As seen, the menu fonts now changed to Oswald
