Following a recent vote cast on whether to drop Gimp, Abiword and Gnumeric but include LibreOffice by default from Xubuntu 15.10, Simon Steinbeiß has announced that Xubuntu 15.10 will replace GIMP, AbiWord and Gnumeric with LibreOffice components based on the outcome of the vote. As it stands, LibreOffice Writer will now be used instead of AbiWord and LibreOffice Calc will replace Gnumeric, but there is no mention of what application will replace GIMP image viewer and editor.

xubuntu 15.10

What this means is that 15.10 will be shipped without Gimp, Abiword and Gnumeric but instead (parts of) the LibreOffice Suite. For those who still prefer GIMP, AbiWord and Gnumeric, these are still going to be available for install. Simply follow the steps below to install them:

sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-writer libreoffice-calc

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get auto-remove

sudo apt-get install gimp abiword gnumeric
