Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon Edition recently released as part of the Linux Mint 16 Editions codename “Petra” is a Linux desktop which provides advanced innovative features and a traditional user experience. The desktop layout is similar to GNOME Panel (GNOME 2); however, the underlying technology was forked from GNOME Shell (GNOME 3). The emphasis is put on making users feel at home and providing them with an easy to use and comfortable desktop experience.

For a complete tour of the new features in Cinnamon 2.0, visit

I have documented below steps to installing Cinnamon Edition (64bit) on a VirtualBox for those that fancy a trial

Step 1: Download ISO file

– Visit Linux Mint download page and download either 32bit or 64bit. Go for the 32bit version if your hardware does not support hardware-virtualization and also for stability

Step 2: Create Virtual Machine

I would assume that you are already familiar with the creation of a New virtual machine and choosing the right disk & memory sizes respectively. Note: since Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, the version to choose will be Ubuntu

Step 3: Install Linux Mint Cinnamon

– Start-up the virtual machine, select the ISO file downloaded and click Start

– Double-click on the “Install Linux Mint” icon. Noticed the message “Running in software rendering mode“. Will take a look at this when evaluating this OS but strangely its other counterparts did not display any such message

– Select desired install Language and click Continue

– Ensure your system passes the 3 checks, then click Continue

– Leave default “Erase disk and install Linux Mint“, click Install Now

– Select your Location and click Continue

– Choose desired Keyboard layout

– Enter details as shown and continue

– Click Restart Now on completion. Note: you might notice that the screen freezes if installing the 64bit version. All you need to do is power-off the VM and start it up 🙂

– On the login screen, click your username and enter the password

Step 4: Install Guest Additions

– Click on Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD image…

– Click Run on the pop-up box

– Enter your root password and click Authenticate

– After install is completed, press Enter to close screen and restart VM

Step 5: Install Update

– Click on Menu > Administration > Update Manager

– Enter root password

– Wait for updates and click on “Install Updates“. After this first install, more updates might appear. Install them also

Please feel free to share your experience on this OS 🙂
